White House Issues Veto Threat on Domestic Violence Bill Lacking LGBT Protections

The White House on Tuesday threatened to veto the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) should protections for LGBT victims remain absent from the bill's language.

The House version of the bill’s reauthorization “fails to include language that would prohibit discrimination against LGBT victims in VAWA grant programs,” according to a White House Statement of Administration Policy (SAP) that lists other perceived major flaws, including the removal of certain protections for immigrants and individuals living in subsidized housing.

Ontario NDP MPP Cheri DiNovo stood beaming in the Ontario Legislature on May 10.

"Today we have seen the 'progressive' in Progressive Conservatives. We have seen the true 'liberal' values in the Liberal Party," she said.

DiNovo's legislation, Bill 33, finally made it through second reading in the provincial legislature.

The bill -- also known as Toby's Act -- has seen the floor of the legislature three times before. It's named for well-respected trans rights activist Toby Dancer, who died in 2004. This time, for the first time, it appears that it may pass.

That, says trans rights activist Susan Gapka, is "historic."

Brian Elliott of the St. Louis Blues and Jordan Eberle of the Edmonton Oilers are the latest in a series of National Hockey League players to endorse the You Can Play project to fight homophobia in sports.

“I support LGBT athletes everywhere,” says Elliott in the video. The project, started by Philadelphia Flyers scout Patrick Burke to honor his late brother Brendan, has been on a roll since starting two months ago. It just teamed up with Major League Soccer in a partnership.

Eberle is a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, given to the NHL player who best exhibits sportsmanship. Elliott is the goalie for the Blues, the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, who fell in the semifinals to the Los Angeles Kings.

Billie Jean King throws out first pitch at Philadelphia Phillies game

Tennis great Billie Jean King threw out the first pitch at today’s game between the Philadelphia Phillies and Houston Astros. King has owned the Philadelphia Freedoms of World Team Tennis since 1974. (Elton John’s song “Philadelphia Freedom” was written in honor of King, his friend).

King was introduced to the crowd as “one of America’s greatest sports icons and social justice pioneers.” She didn’t throw from the mound, but still showed nice form:
